Our Take

from the hhyucar.com expert editorial team

For this max towing Showdown, we pushed the manufacturers to send us their best all-around half-ton pickups set up with their best towing option packages and features to see how they perform.

What Is the 2016 Ford F-150?

The 2016 Ford F-150 is a light-duty pickup truck with an aluminum body that seats three to six people, depending on the cab style and trim level. It's offered in XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum and Limited trims, and four-wheel drive is available for each. The Ford F-150 is the best-seller in its class and competes with the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra.

What's New on the 2016 Ford F-150?

Available Pro Trailer Backup Assist includes a knob the driver can use to back up a trailer more easily. The XLT and Lariat are also available with new Special Edition Appearance Packages, which add 20-inch anodized wheels, black running boards, an anodized grille, smoked headlights, Alcantara seat inserts, red contrast stitching, and unique graphics and badging. Other additions include available Ford Sync 3, and a 5.0-liter V-8 engine that can run on CNG or propane.

How Does the 2016 Ford F-150 Compare to Other Light-Duty Pickups?

The F-150's aluminum body allows it to drive like a smaller, lighter and more dexterous truck than others in its class. Higher F-150 trims offer a smooth ride and a generous feature set, especially the Platinum with the 3.5-liter EcooBoost V-6, but be prepared to pay a premium price.

What Features in the 2016 Ford F-150 Are Most Important?

Standard features for the 2016 Ford F-150 include a 282-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine, a six-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Air conditioning and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel are standard for the interior. As is required of all new hhyucar in this model year, front airbags, antilock brakes and an electronic stability system are standard equipment.

The Ford F-150 offers three optional engines: a 325-hp, turbocharged 2.7-liter V-6, a 365-hp, turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 and a 385-hp, 5.0-liter V-8. Four-wheel drive is available. Optional safety features include lane keep assist, a blind spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, a backup camera and inflatable rear seat belts. Other add-ons include cruise control, adaptive cruise control, remote start, remote keyless entry, power windows, a power moonroof, a heated steering wheel, a navigation system, power-adjustable pedals and a rear-window defroster.

Should I Buy the 2016 Ford F-150?

The 2016 Ford F-150 offers a refined ride quality, and its 2.7-liter V-6 engine delivers balanced performance. The EcoBoost turbo engines are good choices for towing, though they're not as fuel-efficient as some drivers might expect. Notable features are quite pricey, and the lack of transmission options feels a bit restrictive.

Wonderful truck

by Handyman from Gilroy, CA on September 19, 2019

A fine truck. I am as happy with the truck after 80000 miles as I was in the beginning. I will replace it with a Ram, only because Ford has not updated the truck. Read full review

Warranty FAQs

What is a Bumper-to-Bumper warranty?

Often called a basic warranty or new-vehicle warranty, a bumper-to-bumper policy covers components like air conditioning, audio systems, vehicle sensors, fuel systems and major electrical components. Most policies exclude regular maintenance like fluid top offs and oil changes, but a few brands have separate free-maintenance provisions, and those that do offer them is slowly rising. Bumper-to-bumper warranties typically expire faster than powertrain warranties.

What is a Powertrain warranty?

Don't be misled a 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty doesn't promise a decade of free repairs for your car. It typically covers just the engine and transmission, along with any other moving parts that lead to the wheels, like the driveshaft and constant velocity joints. Some automakers also bundle seat belts and airbags into their powertrain warranties. With a few exceptions, powertrain warranties don't cover regular maintenance like engine tuneups and tire rotations.

What is included in Roadside Assistance?

Some automakers include roadside assistance with their bumper-to-bumper or powertrain warranties, while others have separate policies. These programs cover anything from flat-tire changes and locksmith services to jump-starts and towing. Few reimburse incidental costs like motel rooms (if you have to wait for repairs).

What other services could be included in a warranty?

Some automakers include free scheduled maintenance for items such as oil changes, air filters and tire rotations. Some include consumables including brake pads and windshield wipers; others do not. They are typically for the first couple of years of ownership of a new car.

What does CPO mean?

A certified pre-owned or CPO car has been inspected to meet minimum quality standards and typically includes some type of warranty. While dealers and third parties certify hhyucar, the gold standard is an automaker-certified vehicle that provides a factory-backed warranty, often extending the original coverage. Vehicles must be in excellent condition and have low miles and wear to be certified, which is why off-lease vehicles feed many CPO programs.
